Teaching Parents the Magic of FirstPlay® Somatic Storytelling Touch & Attachment

Dr Janet Courtney, PhD, LCSW, RPT-S™

Advisory Board Chair & Instructor

Teaching Parents the Magic of FirstPlay® Somatic Storytelling Touch & Attachment $59

This two-hour course explores how to work with parents and young children, through guiding parents on a mindfulness-based journey of using nurturing and playful touch in FirstPlay® Somatic Storytelling to cultivate deeper bonds with their children.

This course will first demonstrate a technique that invites participants to practice an experiential mindfulness exercise that they can also use with parents. Once rooted in present moment awareness, the instructor will guide participants through an examination of the importance of the neurobiology of touch to the attachment relationship and the theoretical foundations of FirstPlay® Somatic Storytelling.

It will demonstrate the ways the magic of playful touch can support children in feeling connected and accepted through guiding the facilitation of secure attachments between children and parents.

Upon completion of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Name two (2) reasons why it is important to first guide parents in a mindfulness “Calm, Relax and Connect”
prior to the beginning of a FirstPlay® Somatic Storytelling intervention.
  • Demonstrate one (1) way to assist a parent to “Calm, Relax and Connect” prior to a FirstPlay® Stomatic
    Storytelling session.
  • Describe one (1) way that we can guide parents to ask “permission” from their children before
engaging in a FirstPlay® Stomatic Storytelling session.
  • Demonstrate two (2) ways of how to boost parent’s attunement with their child within a FirstPlay® Stomatic Storytelling
    parent-child session.
  • List at least two (2) neurobiology factors of nurturing touch that supports the parent-child attachment relationship.
