This 2-hour training will assist play therapists and mental health practitioners through a mindfulness-based and cultural humility-based lens to work with individuals and families in the
LGBTQ community. Participants will gain a basic understanding of the Sexual Orientation,
Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) of individuals and families and their intersectional
identities in their cultural systems as they apply to play therapy intervention, skills, and
methods.

Through a mindfulness-based approach, this training will examine culturally sensitive
language, gender-affirming practices and strategies, play therapy interventions, and the
interplay of the therapeutic powers of play. Participants will learn relevant mindfulness play
therapy interventions that can be applied in the playroom as they relate to LGBTQ+ Clients.

Upon completion of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze and describe, through the lens of play, two social, emotional, and psychological impacts of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents' development and daily lives.
  • Demonstrate nine affirmative play dynamics specific to LGBTQ+ clients and their families and incorporate three powers of play and clinical considerations into treatment.
