Who is this course for?

This course is designed for graduate-level mental health professionals.

Description:

The chief common factor and essential foundation found in all theoretical orientations to providing play therapy is the therapeutic alliance between therapist and clients. It is equally important for the therapist to have a strong therapeutic connection with the child and the child’s caregivers in providing play therapy services. This three-hour live, online, and interactive presentation will provide participants an opportunity to go beyond basic rapport-building to ensure a therapeutic alliance is not only established but maintained throughout the course of the play therapy. Participants will learn about the use of mindfulness-based practices for the clinician to be fully present and attuned in session with clients and how to include mindfulness-based practices for caregivers and children to learn and practice. There is robust research literature showing that mindfulness-based practices support positive mental health outcomes and participants will receive an overview of what that research says. This course will provide overview of the use of therapeutic alliance as foundational in seminal and historical play therapy theories: Adlerian, Child-Centered, Cognitive-Behavioral, Developmental, Ecosystemic Gestalt, and Jungian.

This training provides 1 Hour Historical and Seminal Play Therapy Theories; 1.5 Hours Play Therapy Skills and Methods; .5 Play Therapy Special Topics

Learning Objectives:

When training participants complete this three-hour live and interactive webinar presentation, they will be prepared to:

  1. Name three reasons attention to the therapeutic alliance in play therapy is essential to effective outcomes.
  2. Define mindfulness as it relates to practices within play therapy for the clinician and the clients.
  3. Explain how mindfulness-based practices contribute to formation and maintenance of the therapeutic alliance in play therapy with child clients and caregivers.
  4. List a minimum of five mindfulness-based therapeutic interventions that can be used with children and caregivers to introduce a regular practice in session and outside of session.
  5. Name a minimum of five benefits to mindfulness-based practices according to the research cited in the presentation.
