About Blending Mindfulness with Elements of Nature in Play Therapy

A Home Study Course

Course Description:

This course presents a recipe for healing and growth that includes three key ingredients: 1) Mindfulness, 2) Nature, and 3) Play.  Mindfulness is a secular and universally available practice shown in a robust body of research to support  positive mental health outcomes. There are bodies of research that support the healing and growth potency of nature and play therapy, as well. When combined, these three ingredients can have a powerful effect in helping children and families experience interpersonal and intrapersonal growth in the therapy room. When nature and play are combined, child and family therapists can introduce clients to the experience and practice of mindfulness. In this home study course, there will be an examination of how the research supports the concepts and practices of the three ingredients toward positive mental health outcomes in the recipe for healing and growth, beginning with a look at the concept of mindfulness. Next, there will be a consideration of what the research tells us about the benefits of being in and with nature, followed by a review of the established efficacy of the therapeutic powers of play. Finally, there will be a case study presented with specific expressive and play-based interventions utilizing elements from nature to foster the beneficial cultivation of mindfulness for clients.

Upon completion of this course, course participants will be prepared to:

  • List three mental health benefits of mindfulness-based practices as used within the counseling relationship.
