Enhancing the Therapeutic Relationship and Client Outcomes Through Therapists’ Practice of Mindfulness

Dr. Matt Hersh, Ph.D, DCEP

Enhancing the Therapeutic Relationship and Client Outcomes Through Therapists’ Practice of Mindfulness $35

At the heart of any effective psychotherapy is a well-formed and responsive therapeutic relationship. In fact, we now know that the therapeutic relationship is as powerful as any specific therapeutic approach we may use.

Fortunately, research has identified several core facets of an effective therapeutic relationship, including therapists’ flexibility and responsiveness, attunement to clients’ individual differences, asking for and humbly receiving client feedback, and the capacity to handle difficult emotions within themselves and their clients. Thus, a successful therapeutic relationship is an emergent property of the therapist who is able to maintain openness, curiosity, humility, non- reactivity, cognitive flexibility, and non-judgmental awareness of moment to moment experiences within and between the individuals in the room.

Remarkably, mindfulness practice, or intentionally directing our attention with curiosity and openness to the unfolding moments of experience, has been shown to support many of the intrapersonal capacities and interpersonal skills needed for an effective therapeutic relationship. As therapists engage in their own practice through formal meditation and informal mindfulness-based exercises, they are laying a strong foundation for a healthy therapeutic relationship and thus more robust client gains.

This course will utilize didactic, experiential, and self-reflection based methods to help you hone your mindfulness skills to enhance your capacity for effective and resilient therapeutic relationships. This skillset is generalizable to every single client regardless of their presenting problem or the particular therapeutic approach you may employ.

Upon completion of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe three key facets of an effective therapeutic relationship.
  • Explain how therapists’ mindfulness practice contributes to effective therapeutic relationships.
  • Identify three mindfulness-based practices that help therapists to cultivate the skillset necessary for enhancing the therapeutic relationship.
  • Discuss how therapists could employ mindfulness outside of therapy sessions to bolster their effectiveness in relating to clients in session.
